Travelers dream destination episode-2

Zhangye National Geopark, travelers most awaited spot.

Today I want to introduce to all the travel freak people out there Zhangye National Geopark. It is said to be the most colorful natural tourist spot. It is located in Sunan and Linze countries within the prefecture-level city of Zhangye, in Gansu, China. It covers an area of 322 square kilometers or 124 square miles. The site became a quasi-national geopark on April 23, 2012. It was formally designated as "Zhangye National Geopark" by the Ministry of Land and Resources on June 16, 2016, after it has passed the on-site acceptance test. Its most attractive characteristics are colorful rock formations. It has been voted by Chinese media outlets as one of the most beautiful landforms in China.

Destination guide:

One can get to Lanzhou first. Lanzhou is the largest and capital of Gansu province in northwest China.  Then he/she can take a flight, high-speed train (Lanzhou West Railway Station - Zhangye West Railway Station), or bus (at Lanzhou East Bus Station) to get to Zhangye, and then go to West Bus Station of the city to take a bus to the Geopark.

How can we roam around the park?

This Geopark has shuttle buses starting from the main entrance and travels to four (4) different stops (viewpoints) along the way - hop-on and hop-off to each of the four stops.

The first stop was somewhat disappointing in that only a few of the hills or mountains had shown the color separation that was seen on some web-photos by the viewers. To enjoy the colors that can be seen on the web-photos require just a little color enhancement using one of the many photo touch-up software. However, the first stop had so little color separation that bringing out the "natural colors" would not be possible.

The second stop was more interesting in that it was easier to view hills (mountains) with some color-banding -- enough to bring out some nice colors. For the third and fourth viewpoint stops, each one had more hills with the color banding that can easily be seen - just needs a little software touch-up to really bring out the colors that are inherent in the natural "banding" in the hills (mountains). The fourth stop was the most stunning of all the view stops because it had by far the most color-banded hills/mountains in the Park.

This Park is very well maintained and has convenient restrooms at the main entrance and at each of the four viewpoint stops

List of some affordable and nearest hotels to the park:

  • Kaoshan  Daying Leisure Mountain Villa
  • Zhangye Holiday Inn Express
  • Zuannshi Hotel
  • Ducheng Holiday Hotel
  • Jinyang International Hotel
  • Zhangye Power Mansion

  • Zhangye Motel
  • Liangmao Hotel

Suggestions:

The images we can find on the internet can actually be enjoyed after rainfall. So to enjoy the most exotic and colorful view one can try to visit the place at rainy weather.
